Over 600 CEOs were recently questioned on the above, and their responses included “How can we be supportive while maximizing productivity”, “How do we help employees with work-life balance?” and “How to keep people engaged and connected and optimistic”.
On the positive side of the spectrum, CEOs report that their teams are eager to be motivated, to find meaning at work during this crisis. A research conducted by Harvard Business School – Dean Nitin Nohria and colleagues, suggested that human is guided by 4 basic emotional drives that are considered the “ABCD” of human motivation. These four basic emotional drives are Acquire, Bond, Comprehend and Defend.
The four drives themselves are fundamental to human psychology and have not changed. Even the COVID-19 pandemic has not altered these dynamics as much as it has intensified or complicated them. Instead, it has increased people’s comprehension and defensive drives.
But a big question remains: What can organizations and team leaders do to increase each of these four drives? Easy, integrate the drives, empower the managers.
When employees report a slight enhancement in the fulfilment of any of the four drives, their overall motivation shows a corresponding improvement which shows that this holistic approach is worth more than the sum of its constituent parts, even though working on each piece adds something.
